Master’s Degree in Computer Science

Master's Overview

Computer science is more important than ever. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth in disciplines such as software development would be significantly greater than in other fields, making computer science degree programmes a 21st-century requirement.

U.S. News routinely ranks the University of Texas at Austin as a top-ten university for computer science. Through the Master of Science in Computer Science Online, the University's Department of Computer Science has combined that top-tier reputation with the flexibility of online study.

The rigorous curriculum of the computer science programme is taught by the same faculty as UT's on-campus degree programme, assuring that you will get the high level of instruction that marks a UT education. The online master of science track provides programmes in a flexible format, allowing you to pursue your educational goals in the way that best fits your employment ambitions. A computer science degree can help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to excel in deep learning, machine learning, advanced operating systems, Android programming, virtualization, quantum information science, or robotics.

The master's degree you will obtain at the end of your studies is among the top online master's degree programmes and will be indistinguishable from its on-campus equivalent (will not say online) for a fraction of the cost of the on-campus programme.

Our computer science degree graduates will have access to world-class teachers, a professional network of bright peers from across the world, and a degree that will allow them to pursue some of the most sought-after occupations.

Prerequisite coursework

Applicants must have a strong background in computer science or a closely connected field. Review of a student's education and/or professional experience will be used to determine their level of expertise.

For admission to the online Master's programme, applicants with a bachelor's degree in computer science from a regionally accredited university in the United States or an equivalent degree from a foreign academic institution are favoured. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in junior and senior level courses to be considered.

If you have a bachelor's degree in a subject other than computer science, you may be considered for admission if you satisfy the following requirements:

Their degree is in a relevant discipline, such as electrical engineering, computer engineering, or mathematics, and they have completed coursework or gained experience that is comparable to the following. Undergraduate computer science courses in Texas
Computer Science Discrete Math (CS 311)
Programming Fundamentals (CS 312)
Structures of Data (CS 314)
Complexity and Algorithms (CS 331)
Organization and Architecture of Computers (CS 429)
Computer Systems Principles (CS 439)

Computer use at work or some programming expertise are not regarded equal to a CS degree and coursework.

Curriculum

The programme includes fundamental courses that gives students a comprehensive overview of the discipline. Elective courses provides instruction in areas that are in great demand in the real world. Students can customise their artificial intelligence and machine learning, software systems, algorithms, and programming languages studies to their own interests.

There are 9 hours of mandatory courses and 21 hours of electives in this 30-hour programme. Students can explore specialities in areas including advanced systems design, machine learning, and artificial intelligence through elective courses.

Software engineering and other high-demand fields of computer science benefit from specialisations. Through obligatory core courses and electives, students will experience utilising programming languages such as Python and C++ to solve computation issues and build important skill sets.

Courses that are required:

Each of the following course categories must have one class:

Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning: Theory and Practice, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing

Advanced Operating Systems, Parallel Systems, and Android Programming are examples of systems.

Algorithms: Techniques and Theory, Optimization, Online Learning and Optimization, Linear Algebra are some of the topics covered in this course.
